SS17 - Down And Out In London And Lagos

Yemzi Spring/Summer 2017 Ready-to-Wear explores obscure beauty through references to Yoruba culture and George Orwell’s literature ‘Down and Out In Paris and London’.

The 14 look collection is made from the finest digitally printed silk satIn and silk chiffon, available in four exclusive print designs.  On close inspection the colourful sequin-like specks adorning garments are this season’s exclusive fashion prints inspired by West African scarification marks and ancient rock art. The hair and make-up took inspiration from Fela Kuti’s wives with cornrows, threading, facial dots and block eyeshadow.

There is a return of the classic silhouettes which include the kimono, wrapper skirt (iro) and bomber jacket, complimented with the introduction of the boubou, combining streetwear styles from Europe and Africa. Like Orwell’s book there is a strong sense of two places that channel gritty optimism. The visuals were shot in a derelict World War II bunker hidden in the centre of Dalston, next to where the womenswear brand is based.

‘Straight Out Of The City Via The Motherland’ consists of 13 ready- to-wear looks, bringing the launch of Yemzi’s ‘Gold Label’. The refreshing designer collection, offering sports-luxury is constructed entirely of 34gsm and 69gsm silk. The exclusive fabric, available in ice blue, tangerine and emerald colourways, takes inspiration from tropical animal skins and their natural environment. The fashion print was created from one of Elizabeth's acrylic painting before being digitalized.
